A new patio transforms your garden into a usable, attractive outdoor living space. But with so many materials available, how do you choose the right one? Here's a guide to the most popular patio materials we work with across Milton Keynes and Buckinghamshire.
Porcelain paving
Porcelain has become increasingly popular in recent years, and for good reason:
- Extremely durable — frost-resistant and won't crack in cold weather
- Low maintenance — stain-resistant and easy to clean
- Range of finishes — available in natural stone, wood and concrete effects
- Consistent colour — manufactured for a uniform look
The downside is that porcelain requires a solid sub-base and precise installation, so it's not a DIY-friendly material. But when laid professionally, it looks stunning and lasts for decades.
Natural stone
Natural stone paving — including Indian sandstone, limestone and slate — offers a timeless, organic look that manufactured materials can't quite replicate.
- Unique character — every slab is different, with natural variation in colour and texture
- Ages beautifully — natural stone develops a lovely patina over time
- Good value — Indian sandstone in particular offers excellent value for money
- Wide range — available in riven, honed and tumbled finishes
Natural stone does require sealing to protect against staining, and some types can be more slippery than porcelain when wet.
Concrete paving slabs
Concrete paving is the most budget-friendly option and has improved enormously in quality over the years:
- Affordable — the most cost-effective option
- Wide availability — available in many sizes, colours and textures
- Consistent — uniform appearance for a clean, modern look
- Durable — modern concrete paving is strong and long-lasting
It doesn't have the character of natural stone or the premium feel of porcelain, but it's a practical choice that works well for many gardens.
Block paving and setts
Block paving and stone setts are ideal for paths, driveways and decorative edging:
- Flexible layouts — available in various patterns including herringbone and basketweave
- Repairable — individual blocks can be lifted and replaced if needed
- Great for detailing — perfect for borders, edging and feature areas
- Traditional appeal — particularly effective in period properties
